Route 66 & Grand Canyon – DAY 7

DAY 7 – Thursday, 5/4/17 – Colorado

Our plan was to drive straight to the Garden of the Gods.  If we got on the road by 8:00 am, we’d be there around 3:00, with a stop for lunch.

I slept in a little and there was a problem with the gas station’s ability to process credit or debit cards, so it was 9:30 by the time we got on the road.

About a half hour down the road, we cam into a town with antiques, salvage, and pawn galore.  We stopped at three different places.  Forrest got a lead on rims for his ’54 Chevy and bought a stopwatch.  I started my Christmas shopping.

Down the road a piece, I convinced Forrest to pull into Mesa Verde National Park.  We saw a beautiful view from the overlook and then turned back to Highway 160 (after eating brunch in the parking lot).

Again, the landscape was beautiful – especially the purple mountains.  Road construction made the drive slower than we expected.

We decided we want to come back and hang out in Pagosa Springs.

We finally arrived at the Garden of the Gods at 6:15 pm.  We hiked around the base on the rocks while watching others scale the sides. Yikes!

After checking into our hotel, we walked down the street to a pizza parlor.  I wasn’t feeling well, so we just went back to the hotel for the evening.
