DAY 5 – Tuesday, 5/2/17 – Grand Canyon National Park
The next morning we got up to see the sunrise at the Geology Museum lookout. I really wanted to sleep in, but Forrest encouraged me to get up. It was worth it. Plus, Forrest thinks the sunrise is beautiful like me! Then, at my suggestion, we went back to the hotel room and took a nap.
An hour later, we got up and went for breakfast at Maswik Lodge at the west end of the park. We took a shuttle towards Hermits Rest, stopping at several lookouts to hike around and take photos. About half way up, we accidently got on a shuttle going back down.
Elk, elk, and more docile elk!!
At the bottom of the hill, we transferred from the red route bus to the blue route bus which took us to the Visitor Center. We bought and ate a little lunch on a rock near a lizard, and then walked from Mather Point along the Run Trail (about 2.5 miles) back to our car at Maswik Lodge. We stopped at the Hop House and Kolb Studio along the way. I was really complaining about a sore hip, knee, and ankle about ¾ of the way. I wish we would have ventured partway down the Bright Angel Trail, but my body would not permit it. We drove back to our cute hotel room and sat in the front yard eating cheese and crackers.
Around 5:00, we drove along Desert View Drive stopping at lookouts along the way. We watched the sunset from the Desert Watchtower Point (the actual watchtower was closed). The sunset was beautiful!
After the 40-minute ride back to our hotel room, we went to the Yavapai Lodge Tavern again and shared a black and bleu burger with kettle chips and bleu cheese dressing.
Try as we might, our tired brains could not come up with a plan for the next day, so we decided to be adventurous and wing it. We fell asleep watching “Young Guns”.
