SATURDAY 4/3/2010 – KURANDA RAINFOREST

Before leaving for the Kuranda Rainforest, Marcia went to the front desk and asked them to confirm our transfer to the airport the following day. There seemed to be some confusion with the Airport Connections Company again. After about 15 minutes, we were told, “It’s all Good.”

Kuranda is midway between Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands. A historic railway train usually climbs through tunnels, across bridged ravines, past waterfalls and stops at Barron Falls. The Skyrail cableway overlooks the coast, rainforests, national parks, mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and some of Australia’s richest agricultural lands.

I wore my kangaroo leather hat. It had been raining steady for two weeks in Cairns. A recent cyclone missed Darwin, but a strange weather system has caused lots of rain. A LANDSLIP closed down the Kuranda train, so we had to take the skyrail both ways. The fog was so thick, we could hardly see the waterfall at Barrons Fall. It is definitely the rainforest!

We had lunch at the Irish Bar & Grill in Kuranda. Lexie had a burger and fries. Marcia and I had their world famous Pot Pie – beef soaked in Guiness and topped with mac and cheese.

We visited the Markets and other shops. I bought a few unnecessary souvenirs. On the skyrail back, we saw an awesome palm tree with a red, berried asterisk looking thing growing out the top.
